Alice in Borderland

Starring Kento Yamazaki, Keita Machida, Yuki Morinaga, and Ayame Misaki, “Alice in Borderland” is the live-adaptation of the popular manga of the same name by author Hara Aso. The psychological thriller sees a jobless videogame gamer Ryohei Alice (Kento Yamazaki) lamenting about his dull life and wishing for one filled with excitement. He gets his wish granted and together with two of his closest friends, Karube (Keita Machida) and Segawa (Yuki Morinaga), they get transported into a parallel Tokyo. There, the trio have to compete in a series of sadistic games to survive.

Alice in Borderland will be available on Netflix on 10 December 2020.

The Prom

Who doesn’t like a high-school (or college) prom? Well, in the conservative town of Indiana, the idea of hosting a prom doesn’t really rest well with some. This Netflix musical by popular American director Ryan Murphy, sees a group of Broadway-obsessed performers coming together and throwing their weight for a charitable cause: by hosting an extravagant prom for protagonist Emma Noland, who was barred from bringing her girlfriend Alyssa to the big dance. The Prom comprises a star-studded ensemble, including actors and actresses Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, and more.

The Prom will be available on Netflix on 11 December 2020.

The Midnight Sky

“The Midnight Sky” is an American science fiction film directed by renowned actor George Clooney. In this post-apocalyptic film, a mysterious global catastrophe has wreaked havoc on Earth. Augustine (George Clooney), a lonely scientist, races against time to warn the astronauts returning to Earth from a space expedition. The movie is adapted from Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel Good Morning, Midnight.

The Midnight Sky will be available on Netflix on 23 December 2020.

Your Name Engraved Herein

“Deep love is simple, but hard,” says a reviewer of the film. And indeed it is. This Taiwanese film has been nominated for four Golden Horse awards and won two, namely “Best Cinematography” and “Best Original Film Song”. It is the highest grossing LGBTQ+ film in Taiwan and tells a story of two schoolboys, who are both enrolled in an all-boys boarding school, getting into an illicit love affair. Set in the 1980s, at a time when the martial law ended and when society remains highly conservative, the film is emblematic of the changes of Taiwan which became the first Asian country to legalise gay marriages.

Your Name Engraved Herin will be available on Netflix on 23 December 2020.

Bridgerton

“Grey’s Anatomy”, “Scandal”, “How to Get Away with Murder”, “Scandal” and “Station 19”, what do these films have in common? They were written by legendary American TV producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes. And adding to her repertoire of engaging productions is “Bridgerton”, which is set to be released on Netflix on Christmas. The period drama, as narrated by Julie Andrews (much like Gossip Girls, but in the Regency-era), will explore the scandals and happenings in the Regency era through the lens of the Bridgerton family.

Bridgerton will be available on Netflix on 25 December 2020.

Lovestruck in the City

Netflix

Christmas came early with a new K-drama by Ji Chang-wook and Kim Ji-won. In “Lovestruck in the City”, Ji plays an affable and honest architect, Park Jae-won, while Kim plays the role of a freelance marketer, Lee Eun-O. Park meets Lee, who was under the guise of her alter-ego “Yoon Sun-ah”, and falls for her. When Lee left, Park had no means of contacting her and calls her a “camera thief” who have stolen his heart. This does sound like a modern Cinderella story, doesn’t it?

Lovestruck in the City will be available on Netflix in December 2020.
