For a quick and inexpensive makeover, consider adding a new coat of colour to your walls. If you are living with your partner, treat this little creative project as a game of sorts: go shopping for paints, don on matching painter overalls, and have fun! If you struggle to find time to repaint your rooms, you can consider only painting certain parts of the wall instead — the trimmings, the ceiling, or even the cornice.

And guess what? You can even consider adding a new coat of paint to some of your wooden furniture too. From coffee table to wooden dining chairs, the possibilities are endless. What many interior designers would suggest is that you consider colour coordinating whenever necessary.

Splurge on the statement pieces

If you really want to treat yourself to a new addition or two, we recommend splurging on the fixtures.  From a new bed to a new sofa, or even a new dining table, these are the things that are important and most used at home. Plus, if you have co-owned them for a while and realised there might have been some creaks and cracks, it makes sense to invest in something new that last. Check out our recommendations:

Reorganising can be eye-opening

If you have a shelf and you store books and other mementoes on it, you can consider reorganising them. Instead of piling books in standard fashion (that is, from left to right), consider stacking them randomly, adding some random ornaments in between, and allowing some space in between objects.

That said, the best way of reorganising is purging. Consider embracing the Marie Kondo philosophy and clear out the clutter. You’d realise that there is decluttering can be quite therapeutic. Here’s a summary of what Marie Kondo advocates:

  1. Pile everything (from clothes to other memorabilia) into a mountain in front of you. This gives you a sense of what to work with.
  2. Go through each piece individually and ponder the golden question: does this spark joy?
  3. If it doesn’t, show appreciation and place them in the “Toss/Donate” pile.
  4. If it does, keep them!

Dull lampshade? Change them!

A boring lampshade is, well, just another functional piece of furniture. But we can always change it into a work of art. Many lamps come with a dull body and a white lampshade. Consider swopping the lampshade with a sprightly one (consider florals or pastel) or one that fits with your own home decor.
