This October, our favourite streaming giant, Netflix, will release an extensive repertoire of shows for you to binge on in a go. There will be plenty of K-dramas (which stars Nam Joo-hyuk, Bae Suzy, Seohyun, and more), a new animated musical that boast an awesome Asian cast (including Cathy Ang, Robert Chiu, Margaret Cho, Sandra Oh, Ken Jeong and more), as well as interesting films and documentaries to binge on.
All treats, no tricks. I suppose this is how Netflix is celebrating Halloween in advance.
1. Emily in Paris
Fans of Sex and the City rejoice! A brand new drama from its creator, Darren Star, will soon premiere on Netflix. Titled Emily in Paris, the comedy-drama features Emily, a 20-something marketing executive from Chicago relocating to Paris to head her dream job as a social media strategist. Starring Lily Collins, the film will see an upbeat Emily (who happens to know no French) making blunders at her new post, attempting to win the trust of her colleagues, and finding new romances along the way.
Emily in Paris will be available on Netflix on 2 October 2020.
2. David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet
Many today know Sir David Attenborough for his soothing, passionate voiceover of the 2001 documentary series, Blue Planet. But the prolific wildlife enthusiast has had TV stints that go way back, including Frozen Planet (2011) and The Private Life of Plants (1995). This year (and quite recently too), the 94-year-old broadcaster has also beaten Jennifer Aniston’s Instagram record of reaching 1 million followers on Instagram. In this unique documentary film, Sir Attenborough will recount his life, and the evolutionary history of life on Earth, to grieve the loss of wild places and offer a vision for the future.
David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet will be available on Netflix on 4 October 2020.
3. Private Lives
In this new South-Korean mystery drama, Private Lives, a group of swindlers stumble upon a sinister surveillance scheme and attempts to unveil it. To do so, they must play what they do best and they come together to face an enormous organisation. Private Lives stars Seohyun,Ko Kyung-pyo, and Kim Hyo-jin.
Private Lives will be available on Netflix on 7 October 2020.
4. BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky
South Korean pop sensation girl group BLACKPINK will soon appear on the screens of our favourite TV streaming service. This would be Netflix first ever K-pop documentary and it features exclusive interviews with never-before-seen footage of BLACKPINK members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky explores the trials and tribulations the famed girl group had faced and will eventually culminate at their historic 2019 Coachella performance, where BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to perform at the Coachella stage.
BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky will be available on Netflix on 14 October 2020.
5. Start-Up Netflix
Starring Bae Suzy, Nam Joo-hyuk, Kim Seon-ho and Kang Han-na, Start-Up is a brand new South-Korean drama featuring the lives of aspiring entrepreneurs trying to make their dreams a reality in the Sand Box, a growing community in South Korea that sees many start-ups vying for an opportunity to succeed. Bae will play the character Seo Dal-mi, who has dreams of becoming the next Steve Jobs, while Nam will play Nam Do-san, a math-whiz who is struggling to keep his company, Samsan Tech, afloat. Kim will play HJan Ji-pyeong, a senior investment manager who is otherwise known as “the Gordon Ramsay of investments” in the film. Kang will play a second-generation CEO Won In-jae who struggles to create success on her own merits.
Start-Up will be available on Netflix on 17 October 17 2020.
6. Rebecca
Based on Daphne du Mairer’s 1938 gothic novel, Rebecca is a brand new psychological thriller to appear on Netflix. The film features a young newlywed (played by Lily James), who impetuously married a rich widower (played by Armie Hammer), arriving at her husband’s family estate only to realise she would soon struggle to live in the shadow of her husband’s late wife, Rebecca.
Rebecca will be available on Netflix on 21 October 2020.
7. The Queen’s Gambit
Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is a female chess prodigy, who was orphaned at eight and learned the game by first watching. At the orphanage, where she frequently plays with the janitor, she became addicted to the state-produced tranquiliser and was banned from playing. It wasn’t until when she turned thirteen that she resumed playing competitively. She soon began breaking the boundaries in the male-dominated world of chess. A riveting adaptation of the novel by Walter Trevis, The Queen’s Gambit is a coming-of-age drama series exploring the cost of being a genius.
The Queen’s Gambit will be available on Netflix on 23 October 2020.
8. Over the Moon Netflix
The next big fall animated movie, Over the Moon, will stream on Netflix a few weeks after the Mid-Autumn festival, a traditional festival that intially saw Chinese communities around the world worshipping the moon for a year of good harvest. The animated movie, which happens to be musical too, features an intelligent girl building a spacecraft to the moon to prove to her family and friends that the moon deity, Chang’e, exists. The film, which is directed by award-winning director Glen Keane, also stars an impressive voice cast including Cathy Ang, Robert Chiu, Margaret Cho, Sandra Oh, and Ken Jeong.
Over the Moon will be available on Netflix from 23 October 2020.
