For many Singaporeans, August is a patriotic month. This year, the nation will be commemorating its 55th years of founding since independence. And despite the present coronavirus pandemic, it is safe to say that that would hardly dampen our celebratory spirit. From August, you’re likely to see returns of old-school Singaporean cult classics that once graced our TV screens joining exciting new shows and films on Netflix.
Fortunately, our favorite TV streaming giant will be streaming a couple of new Korean dramas and films for the month of August too. From the highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history “A World of the Married” to brand new shows, such as “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” and “Sweet Munchies”, I assure that you would be spoiled for choices. 200 Pounds Beauty
This has been a crowd favourite for the longest of time and it would be a pity to not mention it on our list here. The transformative story of a plus-sized ghost singer undergoing a plastic surgery to become a pop sensation may seem monotonous at first glance, but don’t underestimate at how entertaining it can be. The musical romantic comedy stars talented artiste Kim Ah-joong, who sang the film’s hit theme song “Beautiful Girl” and the Korean version of the song “Maria”, and she has since won “Best Actress” for the film at the 44th Grand Bell Awards. In any case, “200 Pounds Beauty” is a lighthearted and funny film that surely wouldn’t fail to entertain.

Stranger: Season 2
With Season One aired in 2017, fans of the thrilling K-drama series have waited three years to watch its second season. At the moment, Netflix remains tight-lipped about the entire premise and plot, but we are expecting new thriller releases coming soon. But for those who have yet binged on the first season, Stranger: Season 1 is all about how a prosecutor, who has lost the ability to feel empathy, teaming up with a gutsy female detective to tackle a murder case amid political corruption.

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
Joining the ranks of Korean rom-coms on Netflix, “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” tells the tale of a pianist, Goo La La (featuring actress Go Ara), who hits rock bottom after her family’s sudden downfall. On a trip to a piano academy in a small village, she meets the mysterious Sun Woo Joon (featuring actor Lee Jae Wook) and falls in love with him.
Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol will be available on Netflix on August 26, 2020.
The World of the Married
For the uninitiated, “The World of the Married” is masterfully scripted story of marriage infidelity and revenge. The show has since been aired on other TV streaming services but will be arriving on Netflix in late August. Bleak and seemingly austere, you’d quickly find yourself getting engrossed in the plot, which will spectacularly unfold to some melancholic plot twists. The K-drama will be void of any lighthearted elements but in exchange, you’d get caustic dialogues and twisty revenge. The visceral break-up drama starres Kim Hee-ae, Park Hae-joon, and Han So-hee. Of which, Kim Hee-ae was nominated and won “Best Actress” in the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards, while Han So-hee was nominated as “Best New Actress”. The show’s director Mo Wan-il also clinched “Best Director”.

Sweet Munchies
Starring Jung Il-woo, Kang Ji-young, Lee Hak-joo, “Sweet Munchies” probably holds the potential the be the funniest K-drama of the lot. The premise is absurd to say the least, and that makes it all the more interesting. When a struggling chef, Park Jin-sung (played by Jung Il-woo), scramble to pay for his father’s medical bills, he decides to lie about his sexuality to become a gay chef and stars in a TV program.
