A look into the strangest beauty trends

If you’re like me, and going through hours of mindless schooling through TikTok and the Internet is part of your daily routine, you’ll know how easy it is to fall down the rabbit hold of bizarre beauty & makeup trends. Beauty hacks, strange tips & tricks, and makeup hacks that don’t seem to even make sense–all of them can be found in the secluded beauty cyber world that not everyone can catch a glimpse of.

And the only way I can explain what this strange (but amazingly addictive to watch) world is? I’ll just have to show it to you. Beauty trends come and go, but the strangest ones always seem to stick. Up ahead, I’ve rounded up some of the strangest and wildest I’ve seen.

Upside Down Roots

We can thank alt-pop sensation, Billie Elish, for this bizarre hair trend. First on the list, and probably one that’s pretty difficult to nail, is the upside down hair dye. Neon roots are having a hot moment in the fashion and beauty world right now but regardless of how popular it is or who has done it, we can’t deny that having a hairstyle like this is pretty strange.

The goal of this trend is to make it look like you have actual neon hair growing out of your scalp. I can’t imagine the amount of times you’ll have to go in with a touch-up and bleach, but I can see how this grunge-inspired dye job is enticing for some. Hey, if you’ve got time on your hands and an itch for a completely out of this world hairstyle to scratch, you may want to try this strange beauty trend.

Feather Brow

We’ve cycled through quite a number of brow trends over the past few years but nothing sticks out quite like the feather brow. We’ve had a crayola-sharpie brow moment when everyone insisted on having the darkest and harshest brows, and that one time when everyone wanted to bleach their eyebrows off.

The middleground? The feather brow. Created as a joke by makeup artist Stella Sironen, you can try this trend out for yourself by using stronghold eyebrow gel and a spooly. Simply load your spooly with a good amount of eyebrow gel and start coming the hairs away from the middle.

Cute? On some faces, sure. Strange? Oh yeah, it’s pretty out there.

Sunscreen Contouring

Here’s a million dollar idea: Abs without ever working out. Like, ever.

But, like every other million dollar idea in the world, TikTok has beaten me to it and come up with an even better but whackier solution. Here’s introducing abs by sunscreen, where you get to create the illusion of having a six pack with none of the situps. All you have to do is grab a lounge chair, a bottle of sunscreen, and start marking out the lines of your “abs”.

Somebody call Chloe Ting and tell her I’m quitting the 2 weeks workout program because I’m getting my abs from the sun! Brb, heading to the store to get a bottle of sunscreen because this is a trend I’m so ready to get on.

Gel Rim Nails

I stumbled onto this trend while scrolling through Pinterest to get an idea for my next nail appointment, and I think I just found one that might make my nail tech’s jaw drop. Thick gel is mixed with coloured nail polish and then lined to form this uneven, organic frame along the edges of the nail.

Having blobs of hardened gel on the top of your nail might seem strange at first, but I can see this cute Korean nail trend taking off in Singapore too. Hands up if you’ll be adding this to your inspiration board!

 The Mullet’s Back

I hear the 80s calling, and it’s not because I’m listening to Belinda Carlisle. The year has seen plenty of strange trends (as illustrated above), but nothing is catching on quite as fast as the modern mullet.

Choppy, layered, and with lots of texture–the modern mullet can be seen on celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Debby Ryan, and Troye Sivan, just to name a few. A typical mullet can be described as “Business in the front, a party at the back”. It features a shorter fringe with long shaggy ponytail-like hair at the back. The sides of this hairstyle are either shaved, or cut very short. It’s only been a few months, but the modern mullet has taken the world by storm. David Bowie would be proud.

Remember, strange doesn’t mean ugly! I personally find some of these really cool, but I don’t think I’ll ever have the confidence in this life to try them for myself. But hey, if you’re up for it, I’ll be here offering you moral support and a virtual hug of encouragement.
